Bringing a Digital Treasure Hunt to Life with Augmented Reality
Bringing a Digital Treasure Hunt to Life with Augmented Reality
To promote tourism in Frankston, Melbourne, we created an engaging digital treasure hunt that encouraged visitors to explore local art through augmented reality (AR). The treasure hunt featured activated murals by local, national, and international artists, blending art, animation, and AR technology in an intuitive experience that invited everyone to join.
Challenge
Our goal was to design a user-centered app with an intuitive UI that made navigating the treasure hunt straightforward, regardless of tech experience. This required designing a seamless experience that would guide users effortlessly through the journey while highlighting Frankston's vibrant art scene.

Design System
Working from client brand guidelines and UX wireframes, I developed a cohesive design system that balanced simplicity and functionality to get us started.
Onboarding & Guidance
A streamlined onboarding process oriented users to the app and set them up for the treasure hunt.
Home Screen
Displayed the number of treasures remaining and provided a clear visual of progress by using question marks to represent undiscovered artworks, which filled in once the AR was activated at each mural.
Interactive Map
The map guided users to different locations, where they could activate AR at each artwork by tapping an icon, bringing the murals to life through their device’s camera.
Success Messaging
Each completed treasure hunt location triggered a congratulatory message with remaining treasure counts to keep users motivated.

Each location offered clues, trivia popups, and occasional rewards like exclusive discounts. After discovering all seven artworks, users could complete a survey for a chance to win a prize.
